 by Lawrence M. O'Rourke

"Gene Baroni was a dynamic battler for social justice whose work and influence could not be confined by clerical or political restraints. Larry O'Rourke has captured all of this vital personality and the power of his ideas in this splendid book"   - David Broder of the Washington Post

Geno Baroni was a man of the people. He grew up near the coal fields of Altoona, PA., where he learned about work and struggle and solidarity. He carried his passion for social improvement into the Catholic priesthood, and then to the inner city where people with foreign sounding names were trying to realize the American dream.

In Washington DC in the 1960's Baroni got involved in the civil rights movement. He marched in Selma when most Catholic clergy were still sitting in their rectories. He pushed his church - both bishops and key people- to listen to black Americans as well as the forgotten ethnic Americans in urban neighborhoods. His prophetic voice was recognized when he was appointed Asst. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the Carter Administration.

This book recounts the Baroni story with the same energy and compassionate insight that marked its subject..
