A Medical and Moral handbook
After setting forth guidelines for arriving at sound ethical and moral decisions, including how to form a correct conscience, Catholicism and Ethics applies these guidelines to such vital health-care issues as artificial insemination, cloning, "test tube" babies, organ and tissue transplants, artificial nutrition and hydration, and the use of ordinary vs. extraordinary means. The book also traces the history of the Church's opposition to artificial contraception, shows why abortion and physician-assisted killing are terrible crimes, and presents sample health-care proxies governing end-of-life decisions. more... Marrriage, Family and Social Issues
An excellent text for high schoolers, campus ministry, and adult faith formation classes.
Starting with the importance of the Beatitudes in living out our call to holiness, Catholicism and Society offers valuable insights and sound advice on the role of marriage and family in building a good and just society.
The book discusses the purposes of marriage, the interplay of husbands and wives and parents and children, how to raise teenagers, and how to combat the anti-family evils of contraception, abortion, and euthanasia. Catholicism and Society also applies Christian moral principles to the role of women in society, the treatment of the elderly, racial discrimination, morality in public life, cults and the New Age Movement, and the ever-present threat of atheism. more... Catholics' hunger for the faith continues to grow. Pope Benedict XVI gives the Church the "food" that is seeks in the 598 questions and answers in the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This 200-page volume offers a quick synopsis of the essential contents of the faith as promulgated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Like the 1992 Catechism, the Compendium has a four-part structure, and includes a section on common prayers and Catholic doctrinal formulas. Because of the question-and-answer format, catechetical leaders-parents, pastors, teachers, principals, and catechists-have a unique opportunity to dialogue with the faithful, and reinvigorate the Church's ongoing mission of evangelization and catechesis. more... Some things never lose their value... Such as dogma and doctrine of the Faith. This is reflected in the Baltimore Catechism.
While "outdated" in the sense that this book was compiled before Vatican II, the Baltimore Catechism still entirely relevant for Catholics today. The book is assembled as a series of questions and answers to a number of matters as it pertains to the faith of Catholic Christians.
This is the first volume, which is targeted to children from 3rd to 5th grade, but adults will find it an enjoyable read. The answers are simple and straightforward, and is a trip down memory lane for some and a wonderful resource for others, (catechists for adults and children should consider using these questions for discussion opportunities. more...
