New American Bible Translation

The New American Bible, published
in 1970, was the 1st official English-language Catholic Bible to be
translated from the original Hebrew, Greek & Aramaic. This fresh
translation was born out of the need for a new version of Scripture
that would be suitable for liturgical proclamation, private reading
& study.

This is the official translation of the
US Conference of Bishops.

The challenge for the translators was to
produce a version of the Bible with language dignified enough for
formal liturgical use but contemporary enough to be readily
understandable to the laity.

Used throughout the US and other English
speaking countries, it is highly recognized because of its use in
the liturgy.

In 1978, a comprehensive revision was
made to the NAB New Testament in order to incorporate recent
biblical scholarship, as well as to reflect the changing nature of
the English language.

Also in 1978, the editors aspired to
produce a version more accurate & faithful to the Greek as closely
as possible.

In 1992, the ICEL committee approved the
Revised Psalms and they were introduced into Catholic Press
editions.

The text of the NAB is the official text
of the Roman Catholic Lectionary used throughout the US.
