Douay-Rheims Bible Translation

The Douay-Rheims Bible is the
traditional Catholic Bible in the English Language.

It was translated with scrupulous
accuracy from the Latin Vulgate Bible of St. Jerome (340-420 A.D.),
which was a careful translation from the original Greek & Hebrew.

St. Jerome, one of the four great
Western Fathers of the Church & brilliant linguistic genius, was
1500 years closer to the original languages (which some scholars say
would make him a better translator of the exact meaning of the Greek
& Hebrew words of Scripture.) In addition the saintly Jerome had
access to ancient Hebrew & Greek manuscripts of the 2nd & 3rd
centuries which have since perished & are no longer available to
scholars today.

It was used universally in the Catholic
Church (Latin Rite) for over 1500 years.

The Vulgate was proclaimed "authentic"
by the Council of Trent in 1546. That council also proclaimed: "No
one [may] dare to presume under any pretext whatsoever to reject
it." (4th Session, 4-8-1546). Pope Pius XII declared that this means
it is "free from any error whatsoever in matters of faith & morals."

The Douay-Rheims Bible received minor
revisions by Bishop Challoner in 1749-1752.

It was approved by the Church many times
over, including by Cardinal Gibbons in 1899.

This was the only Catholic English
translation of Scripture commonly in use for over 200 years.

It was used in the Catholic liturgy
through approximately 1960.

The footnotes in this translation are
totally Catholic (dating back to the original English Vulgate
translation in the 16th century), and not the opinion of modern
biblical scholars.
