Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787), studied in Rome under the encouragement of his goldsmith father. He adopted his style from the work of Raphael and ancient art. Beginning in 1735, He received many commissions to create altarpieces as well as mythological and historical paintings. Batoni was given the position as curator for the papal collections and was a member of Rome's intellectual and social elite.
Amongst his many achievements was to provide a series of paintings that could be used as a model for religious art. His representations of the Sacred Heart of Jesus were perhaps essential in the popularisation and spread of the devotion. more... Item #43235

In 1595 Caravaggio was inspired by the account of Brother Leo of how Saint Francis received the stigmata. Brother Leo's account is of what happened in 1224 when Francis retired to the wilderness with a small number of his followers to contemplate God. On the mountainside at night Brother Leo saw a six-winged seraph come down to Francis in answer to the saint's prayer that he might know both Christ's suffering and His love:
"All of a sudden there was a dazzling light. It was as though the heavens were exploding and splashing forth all their glory in millions of waterfalls of colors and stars. more... Item #43232

A work of art that has inspired thousands…including Henri Nouwen who authored a mediational book by the same title.
"The subject comes from the Bible, The Gospel According to Luke, XV: 20-24. The artist had already turned to the theme several times in his graphic works, but in the Hermitage painting, created not long before his death, the painter endowed it with the sense of great tragedy elevated to a symbol of universal significance. Complex emotions are expressed in the figure of the bent old man and his suffering, kneeling son: repentance and charity, boundless love and regret at the belated spiritual awakening. These images represent the summit of Rembrandt's psychological mastery. more... Item #38148
