In 1595 Caravaggio was inspired by the account of Brother Leo of how Saint Francis received the stigmata. Brother Leo's account is of what happened in 1224 when Francis retired to the wilderness with a small number of his followers to contemplate God. Digital reproduction that is now housed at the Musee des Beaux Arts, Rouen, France. Painted by Caravaggio soon after his arrival in Naples (approx. 1607) it is also referred to as The Flagellation of Christ. A Scriptural event that had inspired many artists, Caravaggio took a new look at the scene by reducing the figures to a minimum, and using light to direct attention to the crucial parts of his composition - Christ's face and torso, the faces of the two torturers, and the hand holding the out-of-frame whip. It's a powerful depiction of this moment of Christ's Passion.
This 16 x 20 inch canvas is mounted on real wood stretchers and is framed in a rich dark frame with bronze beaded edge. (Other frame styles are available - Call us for information.) 22x26 inches in overall size.
